Gulzar was married to actress Raakhee but the couples have lived separately for years.

Their daughter, Meghna Gulzar, who turned film director, made a sensitive film on surrogate motherhood, Filhaal. Her next movie was the light-hearted take on the institution of marriage - Just Married. Gulzar has nicknamed her 'Boski'. His bungalow on Pali Hill, Bombay is called 'Boskiana'.
