After a lot of speculation concerning their relationship, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, who had acted together in several films, announced their engagement on January 14, 2007. The two tied the knot on April 20, 2007.

The wedding, a “private” affair, took place at the Bachchan residence, Jalsa,in Juhu, Mumbai, according to traditional South Indian rites of the Bunt community, to which Ash belongs. Token North Indian and Bengali rites were also performed later. Though the wedding was intended to be “low key”, the aggressive involvement of the media made it a national extravaganza.

Abhishek Bachchan was earlier engaged to Karisma Kapoor. The couple had announced their engagement on Amitabh Bachchan's 60th birthday on October 11, 2002. The engagement was called off in January 2003. Ash was involved with actor Salman Khan and later Vivek Oberoi.
