Subhash Ghai
Early Years:

Subhash Ghai graduated in commerce from Rohtak, Haryana and moved to Pune, Maharashtra to learn cinema at the Film and Television Institute of India. After attaining a diploma, he started working in the Indian film industry in 1970.


Debut:

Ghai worked his directorial debut with Kalicharan. Armed with the script he had done he met producer- distributors NN Sippy with Shatrughan Sinha’s recommendation. Sippy liked the script and asked Ghai who’d direct the film. Ghai said,”I” . Ghai’s confidence convinced and impressed Sippy and he agreed. Kalicharan was a big hit and Shatrughan Sinha who was a villian established his credendial as a hero.


Career Graph:

After the success of Kalicharan, Ghai went ahead with the same Shatrughan Sinha-Reena Roy team and made Vishwanath(1978), another hit . But it was with his third film, Karz (1980) that he hit the big time. There was no looking back for him after that. After the phenomenal success of Vidhaata (1982), with the veteran Dilip Kumar in the lead, Ghai launched his own production company, Mukta Arts, with Hero. He turned a small-time villain Jackie Shroff into a hero in Hero. Ghai dominated the ‘80s with an unbeaten record, with films like Karma (1986), Ram Lakhan (1989) raking in the mega bucks. His run of success continued through the ‘90s with hits like Saudaagar (1991) which had two giants like Dilip Kumar and Raaj Kumar clashing histrionically. Saudaagar won for Ghai filmfare’s best Actor Award.

Ghai always showed the gumption to make films without resorting to superstars of the time. He never made a film with Amitabh Bachchan. Instead, he made his debut with a villain-turned hero, Shatrughan Sinha. He launched Jackie Shroff and Meenakshi Sheshadri in Hero and turned them hit stars. He rediscovered Madhuri Dixit and discovered Manisha Koirala and Mahima Chaudhary, got the best out of Aishwarya Rai in Taal.

With his penchant for doing things larger than life, Ghai came to be identified as the biggest showman in Hindi Cinema.

His films had outstanding music irrespective whether the composer was Laxmikant Pyarelal (Ram Lakhan, Hero, Khalnayak), Nadeem-Shravan (Pardes) or AR Rahaman (Taal).
