Early Years: Juhi chawla hails from Jalandhar in Punjab. After schooling she came down to Mumbai and graduated from Sydenham College, Mumbai. She entered the Femina Miss India contest in 1984 and won the title. Later at the Miss Universe contest she won the Best Costume Award
Debut:
She made her debut in Mukul Anand’s Sultanat(1986) opposite Dharmendra and Sunny Deol. But the film was a box-office disaster.
Career Graph:
After the debacle of her debut, film Sultanat, Juhi Chawla went down South to act in a Kannada film, Premaloka (1987), which turned to be a huge hit. The turning point was Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), director Mansoor Khan’s debut film, which turned out to be a trend setter. She made a winsome pair with Aamir. However, her films with Aamir that followed Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak didn’t do too well. Juhi’s conservative demeaning and staid image put her at a disadvantage until Dharmesh Darshan’s Lootere (1993) changed her image drastically. She managed to look glamorous and sexy in the film co-starring Sunny Deol. Followed Darr (opposite Sunny Deol and Shah Rukh Khan), Aaina (opposite Jackie Shroff) and Hum Hai Rahi Pyaar Ke (opposite Aamir Khan) and gave a big boost to her career, and the industry saw her as a challenger to Madhuri Dixit, the emerging numero uno. However, a series of lacklustre films that followed saw Juhi lose out on a great opportunity to reach the top rung. But she continued to sustain herself with good performances in films like Daraar (1996), Mr and Mrs Khiladi (1997), Yes Boss (1997 and Duplicate (1998). Ishq (1997) and Deewana Mastana (1997) revealed her tremendous flair for comedy. A highly underrated actress she came up with some outstanding performances in the later stages of her career in films like Jhankar Beats Deewarein, My Brother- Nikhil and Bus Ek Pal. As a partner with Shah Rukh Khan and Aziz Mirza in Dreamz Unlimited and Red Chilies, she takes active interest production activities. She has been successfully doing television commercials (like Kurkure). She is seriously into Hindustani classical music and is planning to hold a concert sometime.
