New York officials script search Kabir Khan!

Jun 20, 2009

Film-maker Kabir Khan had to submit the entire script of his forthcoming film New York when he requested for permission to shoot at the military prison of Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp, a place where people suspected to be involved with the 9/11 terror strike in America were detained.

We have learnt that the sensitive nature of the film, based on the series of co-ordinated al-Qaeda suicide attacks that saw the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center reduced to rubble thereby killing 2,974 innocent people, is the reason why they did so. The film also probes the aftermath of the tragedy as South Asians are racially profiled and many innocents are arrested as suspects to the crime because of their ethnicity.

Explains Kabir, "We had to submit the script to seek permission to shoot in Guantanamo as well as in the States and we got their green signal to go ahead very easily. The film may be about 9/11 and what happens post it, but they did not object to our theme and did not even raise any questions. The US officials were very cooperative and we shot for around three days at this high-profile prison."

The film-maker adds, "We shot in the prison where those detained in connection to 9/11 were kept. It was a moving experience for us. The portion in which we shot was obviously empty but imagine being in the prison where hardened criminals were being lodged!" he exclaims.

It seems the alleged mastermind of the 9/11 attacks Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was housed there.
