Juhi Chawla

Juhi, a onetime Femina Miss India – she won the title in 1984 – made a disastrous beginning in wiz kid Mukul Anand’s Sultanat (1986) opposite Sunny Deol, but bounced back from the brink in Mansoor Khan’s debut film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988). She made a winsome pair with Aamir Khan which was heralded as the hottest of the time. But their later films together like Tum Mere Ho and Love Love Love didn’t live up to expectations. Though Aamir moved on, it took Juhi a while to regain lost ground. Her Achilles’ heel was her demure, conservative image. It came in the way of her breaking into the big leage at a time when girls from conservative families like Madhuri Dixit were shedding their inhibitions. Madhuri hat shot into stardom with her bold ‘Ek do teen…’ number in Tezaab (1988). Juhi saw the writing on the wall quickly enough to don a bold sexy look opposite Sunny Deol in Dharmesh Darshan's Lootere. A song on the beach in just a wet white shirt had her looking ‘hot’. The impact was instant. A series of hits like Bol Radha Bol, Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman established her credentials and shot her into the big league. Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke also won her the Filmfare award for Best Actress. With the phenomenal success of Yash Chopra's Darr (1993) the demure Juhi Chawla was within striking distance of the reigning queens of the time Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi. Her successful pairing with Shah Rukh Khan gave fresh impetus to her career. They looked good together in films like Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Darr, Yes Boss and Duplicate. Their onscreen pairing spilled off screen too. The duo, along with Aziz Mirza, formed a production company, Dreamz Unlimited, to make their kind of films. The failure of their first production Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani at the turnstiles, however, ended their screen pairing. Careless career planning – she had no substantial films to back up her hits – led to Juhi losing her way. However, she continued to be Shah Rukh’s business associate, helping him and the third partner Aziz Mirza. After her marriage to industrialist Jai Mehta in 1998 she decided slow down to rear a family. But continued to do select off-beat films like Jhankar Beats, Deewarein, Bas Ek Pal and My Brother Nikhil. She is now working in Swamy and Ravi Chopra’s Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Bhootnath along with her favourite co-star Shah Rukh Khan. She has been successfully working on TV commercials as well.
