Aamir Khan is an actor with an attitude. Doggedly individualistic and fiercely competitive, he believes that ‘you can’t live to please the crowd. if you try, you will have no individuality left.’ Those who know Aamir know that they are not just words. He has, over the years, shown a resolve to live by what he has believed in, even if it meant ploughing a lonely furrow.
Aamir’s strength is his credibility. His films command an impressive 'opening' on the strenghth of his involvement and presence, irrespective of who the director is or what the rest of the cast is. His obsession with perfection and his eye for detail often irritate his directors and co-stars, but the outcome of his stubbornness is invariably reflected in the quality of his films. Almost a decade ago, after seeing some of the mediocre films he had acted in in the initial burst, he decided not be a part of the rat race. Instead he choose his films meticulously on merit. When Ghulam hit the jackpot at the box-office -- it was his fourth consecutive hit in three years -- he thumbed down all the films offered to him in the same genre and decided to take a break to work on a script that would take him beyond what he had already achieved. Lagaan was the outcome of that decision. The fact that hed turned down the first draft of the screenplay didn't deter him from going back to it. Aamir then backed his friend Ashutosh Gowariker to the hilt in spite of the latter's poor track record as a director. The mind-boggling success of Lagaan justified his conviction
After seeing through the sham behind most awards given out by mags and channels, he decided in 1993 not to attend any more awards functions, and has stuck by it resolutely. It’s a tribute to his conviction that he didn’t budge even when his first film as director, Taare Zameen Par, was in the running for several awards, including the most important one for the Best Director. Aamir believes that every actor should be his own judge and not get swayed by plaudits. His sense of judgement is reflected in his body of work that ranges from Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander, Andaz Apna Apna and Dil to Rangeela, Sarfarosh, Dil Chahta Hai , The Rising: The Ballad Of Mangal Pandey and Taare Zameen Par.
